The Thaimaçu Lodge is located south of the state of Pará in a transitional area between the woodland and the Amazon Rainforest. The total land for birdwatching expands across an area of 3.5 million hectares that also includes an Indian reserve.

In this region there exists a large variety of habitats such as, the high forest, the low woodland, high woodland, open fields and many rivers of different sizes. This allows the birdwatcher to expose themselves to these different regions, increasing the possibilities of finding a greater number of bird species.

Above all, this region has the characteristics of holding a high level of endemism, as the Pipra Vilasboasi (golden crowned manakin), as well as a newly discovered specie of parrot called "papagaio careca", which still does not have an English name (probably it will be called bold parrot).

What is the difference between the Pantanal and the Amazon, for birdwatching?

The main difference existing is that the Pantanal is a more opened area, what makes it easier for birdwatching. However, the Amazon has a greater variety of species. Therefore the best option is to visit both places and experience each of there uniqueness.

Day 1 - Guests will be met at Alta Floresta - MT airport by a hotel representative and transferred by charter plane to the Thaimaçu Lodge. The remaining of the day we will take a walking tour through the property, where we will come in contact with some interesting birds such as: tanagers and toucans. Every evening will be highlighted with a group meeting to checklist all the species observed.

Day 2 - The morning begins with a delicious breakfast. Following this we will be transported by boat up São Benedito River until we reach the "Ressaca" Trail where we will be guided through the jungle, walking and observing the avifauna. Some examples of the birds that may be found are: manakins and ant shrikes. Different types of monkeys might be seeing moving in between trees. After a lunch break, guests will begin their expedition down river towards an island, where they will have the possibility of observing the umbrella bird and the red fan parrot. The rest of the day we have the possibility to walk through an old airplane landing strip, which is an open field making it easy to look at the various hummingbirds that are typical of this area.

Day 3 -
First thing in the morning we will be taken to a trail and walk through a trail that passes in the high tree section of the forest. Following a small river we will be able to find birds such as: trogons, motmots and wood creepers. After lunchtime we will go by boat up São Benedito River, this time exploring the CILIAR Forest birds that are commonly found in lagoons and in the "Água Limpa River" (Clear Water River). Here we will have the chance to observe a great variety of parrots and parakeets, including the painted parakeet. With luck we may even see a birds of pray, such as the black hawk and harpy eagle.

Observations:

1. Exploring the Amazon is more challenging that in the Pantanal, that is the reason why we have chosen a longer itinerary.

2. Guest must know that this schedule can be changed according to the group. Always in accordance to the rules and regulations of the Lodge and the availability of transport.

3. As all explorers understand we cannot guaranty that they will see any specific animal or spot for this depends on the seasons and climatical conditions.

Day 4 -
This is the day to explore the Cururu River, a very distinguished region of the Amazon. Leaving early in the morning to Safari by Land Rover, we will pass through the low and high woodland. These are unexplored areas, seldomly visited and very hard to find in the Amazon. On the way, we will pass by a region where there exists a high concentration of screaming pihas, this is also the area where two endemic species live: the Pipra Vilasboasi (golden crowned manakin) and the bold parrot. After a short break we will leave by boat up Cururu River observing the birds of the CILIAR forest. This river is quite narrow and it divides itself into smaller rivers, some of which have crystal like waters. Lunch will be served by the river at the Cururu Camp where guests can also find the famous black caiman that can measure up to 18 ft. in length. Returning in the evening will give visitors the opportunity to do some spotlighting in search of nightjars.

Day 5 - This morning we will cross the São Benedito River and walk through the trail of the low and high woodland. In the afternoon we will do a Photo-Safari through the road that goes to town looking for red-throated caracaras that live and hunt in groups. With luck we will be able to see a sun bittern bird.

Day 6 - Today is the last day of the trip, so guests will get a chance to walk around once again through the Lodge surroundings where there is always the possibility of observing different bird species. After lunch we will be transferred via charter plane to the Alta Floresta - MT airport.
